Featuring works by: Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, and Frank Stella The Art Museum of South Texas opened its doors on the Bayfront site in October of 1972. The relationship with Philip Johnson, the architect of the original building also brought into the mix David Whitney, who was his friend and Director of the opening exhibition: Johns, Stella, Warhol: Works in Series. This 1972 Inaugural exhibition was acknowledging that artists often work in series and in doing so repeat and incorporate variations on the themes. The three artists: Jasper Johns, Frank Stella and Andy Warhol are three American artists who were known by Johnson and Whitney, and whose work was increasingly seen in venues and widely collected. In celebration of AMST’s 50th anniversary year works from collections housing Warhol, Johns and Stella, and adjacent will exhibit facets of the permanent collection in other galleries. The intention is to show the work of artists that occupied the AMST galleries at a time that these American men were and remain highly recognized for their modernist contributions to art and the cannon of art, as it has been shown.
