The modern version of The Tremont House resides within the picturesque 1879 Leon H. Blum Building, but the hotel traces its roots back to when the original version opened in 1839. That hotel operated for nearly 30 years before it was destroyed by a fire. A new four-story hotel that was the envy of the South opened in 1872 and welcomed such distinguished guests as General Sam Houston, Ulysses S. Grant, and legendary ballerina Anna Pavlova. Today’s version opened in 1985, the same year that Galveston’s Mardi Gras celebration returned to the island. The parade still passes in front of the hotel, making it a great place to take in all the festivities.
Your stay at The Tremont House begins the moment you walk into your well-appointed room full of touches that harken back to a different era. High ceilings, hardwood floors, and period-style furnishings add historic charm throughout, while a flat-screen high-definition TV provides both entertainment and a reminder that you are still in the 21st century. Relish all the comfort of the Tremont House’s single- and double-bed hotel rooms, or pamper yourself by staying in either the Tremont or Belmont Suite. Both suites have separate living areas and a variety of aesthetic touches that will make your stay unforgettable.
Along with its lavish rooms and top-class amenities, The Tremont Hotel is just steps away from many of the top restaurants, bars, and attractions on the Strand. Visit the Galveston Railroad Museum to learn about the history of rail in this corner of the Lone Star State, or browse the art galleries located along Postoffice Street. In the evening, take in a show at the ornately decorated Grand 1894 Opera House, or visit one of the many bars in the area. The Tremont House is also just a few blocks away from the Texas Seaport Museum and the cruise terminals, making it a great place to stay in Galveston if you’re going on a cruise.
Once you’re done exploring the Strand, return to your room and rest up for another great day in Galveston.
