Margaret Mead once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” Bessie Heard and the dedicated staff and volunteers at the Heard Natural History Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary are a case in point.
In 1967, Bessie founded the Heard, a 501(c)3 organization, to preserve unspoiled land for future generations to enjoy. Although Bessie died in 1988 at 101 years of age, her desire to bring nature and people together continues to play out here every day, for the benefit of both. For the flora and fauna of North Texas, the Heard provides precious habitat. For visitors, the Heard is a place to discover, explore, and escape to the great outdoors. Whether you’re an animal lover, outdoor enthusiast, or budding paleontologist, you’ll find something that captures your heart at the Heard.
Discover the Natural World
The Heard’s mission is to foster a deeper appreciation of the environment through education and experiences. The Heard’s natural science museum and 289-acre wildlife sanctuary are designed to do just that. Engaging hands-on exhibits spark curiosity, while opportunities to connect with wildlife ignite a passion for the environment.
The fun — and discovery — begin in the museum. Here you’ll meet Texas Nessie. She’s a giant prehistoric reptile that swam in this area 93 million years ago. She is just one of the area’s former inhabitants on display. You’ll also see a massive 85-million-year-old sea reptile, fossilized tortoises, and a wooly mammoth to name a few. Interactive displays on the sanctuary’s ecosystems make the museum an excellent place to begin your journey.
Nearby, the Animal Encounter Trail introduces you to native and non-native animals that can’t be safely returned to the wild. As you meet the animals, including bobcats, coatimundi, and a gray fox, you’ll appreciate the key roles animals play in their native ecosystem.
An Invitation to Explore
Beyond the museum’s walls, the sanctuary’s varied terrain includes forests, wetlands, and a reclaimed Blackland prairie. When you visit during the springtime, you’ll have the privilege of viewing this exceedingly rare prairie blanketed with wildflowers!
Spring and autumn also usher in migratory songbirds in a rainbow of colors. Birdwatchers, get ready to check a lot of birds off your list! Throughout the year, up to 240 migrant and permanent bird species frequent the sanctuary. Take a self-guided tour along the network of winding paths and boardwalks and immerse yourself in the sights and songs of nature. You can also join one of several guided walks that take place each week.
For another vantage point, go on a guided canoe tour. As you paddle through the Heard’s wetlands you can catch a glimpse of amphibians, reptiles, and the mammals that frequent the watering hole. No matter how you explore the sanctuary, you’ll have an opportunity to discover native species in their natural habitat and learn about the delicate balance of these ecosystems.
A Family-Friendly Destination for All Seasons
Throughout the year, the Heard has special exhibits and events. During the summer, the Butterfly House and Garden come alive with newly hatched butterflies and vibrant, native flowers. Autumn signals the return of Dinosaurs Live! It’s a perennial favorite. In addition to a 46-foot T-Rex, you’ll encounter 14 life-sized animatronic dinos that move, roar, and pose for photos!
Don’t be a Stranger
No matter when you visit, you’ll find something new to experience. Whether it’s an Owl Prowl Night Hike to hear the hoot . . . hoot . . . hoot of this wise raptor or a family campout complete with a movie and popcorn, the Heard offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Don’t be a stranger. Come to the Heard and take a walk on the wild side!
