In Bessie Heard’s day, the urban sprawl had yet to extend to McKinney. Yet, this conservationist, environmentalist, and forward-thinking woman saw a need to preserve wildlife habitat. Visitors to this 289-acre slice of heaven reap the benefits of Bessie’s vision. Along with a natural science museum containing fossils and the skeletons of massive prehistoric sea creatures, you’ll meet wildlife ambassadors that have been rehabilitated but are unable to return to the wild. While you’re there, get up close to nature on one of the sanctuary’s trails. You’ll walk away with an appreciation of the abundance of plants, animals, and birds that the Heard supports, especially during spring and fall migration.
In addition to the permanent exhibits, the Heard hosts educational programs including nature and birdwatching walks. Special events throughout the year are a highlight. Whether you visit the Butterfly House during the summer or step back millions of years into the Dinosaurs Live! life-sized animatronic dino exhibit each fall to early spring, there’s always something happening at the Heard!
