Attractions in Del Rio

Del Rio is a frontier town that offers plenty of outdoor adventure and a flourishing arts community. The town is just a few miles away from Lake Amistad, the third largest lake in Texas that is home to some of the best bass fishing in the state. Lake Amistad is part of the Amistad National Recreation Area, a veritable hotbed of outdoor fun popular for its numerous recreational opportunities. Back in town, there are art galleries to browse, museums to visit, and a one-of-a-kind culture to revel in. These are just some of the attractions in Del Rio. Casa de la Cultura
Casa de la Cultura is a small community arts center that displays paintings, sculptures, and other works made by artists from around the state of Texas. The art center also hosts art, music, and dance classes, and it participates in Del Rio’s First Friday Artwalk.

Del Rio Council for the Arts at the Firehouse Gallery
This art center, one of several in Del Rio, displays a variety of local and regional artwork. Various affordable art and culinary classes are offered at the art center, housed within one of the town’s historic buildings. The Firehouse, as it’s called, was built in 1922 as Del Rio’s first firehouse, city hall, and jail.

Devils River State Natural Area
Those looking for a rugged wilderness experience need look no further than Devils River State Natural Area. This 37,000-acre state natural area features rocky limestone canyons and one of the most ecologically intact rivers in Texas. The park is a popular location for hiking, camping, nature viewing, photography, mountain biking, swimming, and fishing. A kayaking trip 47 miles down Devils River to the Lake Amistad National Recreation Area is a great way to see the area, but should only be done by experienced kayakers.

Falcon Art Gallery of Texas
Falcon Art Gallery showcases the works of emerging and established artists from around the world in its gallery, housed within The Glenn-Dowe House, a Texas Historic Landmark. The gallery is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday afternoon.

Lake Amistad National Recreation Area
Lake Amistad National Recreation Area is a vast international reservoir known for its clear water and spectacular scenery. Hiking, camping, paddling, and even scuba diving are popular activities within the recreation area. The Amistad Dam is available to visitors as well and affords a sweeping view of the lake. Since the dam is an official Port-of-Entry, all visitors must have a valid passport with them to enter.

Laughlin Heritage Foundation Museum
The Laughlin Heritage Foundation Museum displays photographs, medals, and artifacts meant to tell the story of the individuals and units that once served at Laughlin Air Force Base. Visitors can tour the downtown Del Rio museum on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

Lee Bunch Studio Gallery
The Lee Bunch Studio Gallery exhibits watercolor, oil, and pastel paintings, hand-painted china, and other works of art at its studio near downtown Del Rio. Visitors can browse the gallery Monday through Friday and on Saturday afternoons.

Mesquite Creek Outfitters
The rustic and cheerful environment of this craft beer and wine taproom offers thirsty individuals and social butterflies a venue to enjoy an evening or afternoon of tasty drinks and animated conversation. MCO has a select lineup of craft beers, ciders, and wines from around the state and country. Food is available too. Paul Poag Theatre
The City of Del Rio’s Paul Poag Theatre stands downtown, showcasing the art-deco opulence of its facade. Once upon a time, and for several years, the building housed The Rita Theater. Now it’s available for both public and private events, hosting comedy and music performers from around the nation. Acclaimed local live-theater group, The Upstagers perform their plays at the Paul Poag.

Seminole Canyon State Park
Experience one of North America’s oldest cave dwellings and some of the oldest Native American pictographs at Seminole Canyon State Park, located about 40 miles northwest of Del Rio. Hiking, mountain biking, camping, and nature viewing are some of the ways to enjoy your time at the canyon. If you want to go down into the canyon, you will need a guide. Val Verde Winery
Visit Val Verde Winery, the oldest continuously operating winery in Texas. The winery was established in 1883 when Italian immigrant Frank Qualia immigrated to Del Rio and found Lenoir grapes thriving in the area. Today, the winery produces a wide range of wine using grapes grown in its vineyard on the southeastern side of Del Rio. Tours and tastings are available to the public Monday through Saturday.

Whitehead Memorial Museum
Experience life on the frontier at the Whitehead Memorial Museum, the only full-time, public museum in Val Verde County. This museum examines the early history, cultures, and economics of the city of Del Rio and the surrounding areas. It includes an interactive learning area that includes a storytelling room, chapel, log cabin, blacksmith shop, and much more.
