Cinco de Mayo in Huntsville

On May 5, 1862, a Mexican army won a famous victory against a numerically superior French force at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. Although the triumph didn’t have a significant impact on the war, it is still celebrated in Mexico and throughout North America as a holiday you may already be familiar with: Cinco de Mayo. While there are commemorative celebrations all over the place, it’s hard to beat the rollicking Cinco de Mayo event in Huntsville. Savor all the sounds and tastes of Mexico at this annual one-day event, typically held on the first Saturday of May in downtown Huntsville.

There are many ways to immerse yourself in Mexico’s rich culture during this Cinco de Mayo celebration. Let the spices perform a jarabe dance across your taste buds while you sample popular Mexican dishes from one of the on-sight food vendors. Then listen to the rhythmic melodies of traditional folk music. Watch as performers from the Ballet Folklorico of Huntsville mesmerize with their vibrant dresses. Finally, browse the unique and colorful wares at one of the Mexican crafts booths. A special crafts area and plenty of games provide some fun for folks of all ages who are looking to enjoy more hands-on experiences.

Admission to this Mexican cultural event in Huntsville is free, although you may want to bring cash for food, drink, or if you’re planning on shopping for a souvenir or a one-of-a-kind piece of art. Parking is available in the Walker County Annex Parking Lot near downtown Huntsville. Since 2011, Walker County Unidos and the League of United Latin American Citizens have collaborated to put on this event to promote Mexican culture and awareness of social services and continuing education.
