Karankawa Village

Karankawa Village

Karankawa Village consists of Cattails, a modern-day mercantile store, and The Lodge, a “B&C” (bed and cookies) where visitors can enjoy a night’s stay, nestled in Matagorda, Texas. Cattails first opened its doors in 2007 and The Lodge in 2009 by Matagorda county resident, Sue Milberger. The Karankawa Village staff embraces the memory of the Karankawa Indians throughout the property, as “Matagorda was at the heart of their coastal territory”.

Matagorda is a great weekend escape that is less than two hours from Houston, less than three hours from Austin, and less than four hours from San Antonio. It is filled with outdoor adventures and is known for some of the greatest fishing and bird-watching in the nation. On the other hand, it is the perfect getaway for a weekend on the beach with your loved one, kids, or girlfriends to chill on the Gulf Coast.

The Lodge is encompassed by beautiful wrap around porches and “outdoor living rooms”, and features a prominent fireplace that guests love to gather around. Each of the eight rooms is uniquely styled, featuring the finest organic bedding, large bathrooms and original artworks. Gourmet coffees and flat screen televisions are found in each room as well.  They also offer the Wine and Roses package for an additional cost for the lovebirds that come to visit. Packages include rose petals, a bottle of wine, and a vase of roses beside the bed. Call between the hours of 9-5 to make your reservations.

Cattails has an array of lovely artwork from Texas artists, including pottery, paintings, photography and jewelry. One can also find a variety of cigars, canned goods, spa products, furniture, home accessories, men’s as well as women’s clothing and footwear. For children, they carry t-shirts, flip flops, books, toys, backpacks, DVDs and CDs. On top of all of this, they offer a full coffee and wine bar.

The signature wines featured at Cattails are their own private label, Chateau Bubba Wines. Chateau Bubba was originated by Milberger’s best friend and business partner of some 30 years, Joe Bradberry. Bradberry was a bigger than life kind of guy. He was well traveled and knew something about everything. He was a connoisseur of many things and passionate about his wines. He laughed and said no matter where his travels took him, people would automatically assume he was a ‘Bubba’ when they learned he was from Texas. So he thought it would be fun to have a ‘Chateau Bubba’ label. A friend ran with the idea and created the label, and then Bradberry and Milberger decided to launch it through Cattails. Although Bradberry passed away before the wine was produced, his legacy lives on because on each bottle you will see “In Honor of Joe Bradberry”.

Karankawa Village hosts their famous Bubba Fest each fall, and it is attended by visitors from near and far. It features live music, wine tastings, and Texas artists who are invited to set up and sell their artwork on the porches of Cattails and The Lodge. Guests can join the festivities by viewing the beautiful arts and crafts of Texas while sipping on Chateau Bubba wine, and even compete in a Spam Sculpting Contest or Best Dressed Bubba Contest.
