Buffalo Soldiers National Museum in Houston
Their courage runs deep, their history long. These are the Buffalo Soldiers, a group of African-Americans who proudly served in the United States military from 1866 to 1951. Experience the history of this distinguished group of servicemen at The Buffalo Soldiers National Museum in Houston. The museum offers exhibits, events, educational programs, and art to create an interactive and engaging experience for visitors to Houston while also preserving the legacy and honor of these African-American soldiers.
The nickname “Buffalo Soldiers” was given to African-American soldiers by Cheyenne warriors out of respect for their valor in combat. In 1866, legislation was adopted to create six African-American Army units, identified as the 9th and 10th Cavalry and the 38th, 39th, 40th, and 41st Infantry Regiments. The four infantry regiments were later reorganized to form the 24th and 25th Infantry Regiments.
Take a step back in time as you walk through exhibits, learning how the Buffalo Soldiers contributed to the war efforts from the American Indian Wars through the Korean War. The museum also offers a broad look at African-American military history from 1770 to 2000, from the American Revolutionary War to the Persian Gulf War.
Participate in one of the museum’s many educational outreach programs, including parades, lectures, and art collaborations. The museum also includes an exhibit on modern-day Buffalo Soldiers: African-American astronauts. Don’t miss their impressive gift shop, complete with videos, apparel, and literature.
