What to Do & See in Alpine
Some of our most well-known area attractions are:
- The National Historic Site of Fort Davis, 25 miles north of Alpine, is considered the best existing example of a frontier fort.
- The McDonald Observatory, just 45 miles from Alpine through Fort Davis, is a beautiful place to view the West Texas skies during the day or night.
- The Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute, 15 miles north of Alpine, will wow you with their gardens, hiking trails, and educational center.
- In Marathon, 26 miles east of Alpine, you'll find charming shops and galleries plus historic buildings with quaint bars and restaurants.
- Marfa, 26 miles west of Alpine, is the home of the Chinati Foundation made famous by artist Donald Judd. Sophisticated modern galleries abound in this historic ranching community.
- Big Bend National Park, 108 miles sough of Alpine, is the star attraction of our region. Camping, hiking, bird watching, abundant wildlife, and spectacular scenery are just a few of the reasons for visiting this national treasure.
