Canyon Lake Area
Kick back as you float down the pristine Guadalupe River. Try your luck at hooking a catfish or white, striped, or largemouth bass. Cruise along the shimmering waters of one of the Lone Star State’s most scenic lakes.
Welcome to the Canyon Lake Area, known as the Water Recreation Capital of Texas.
Although this part of the state is known for its aquatic appeal, there’s far more to enjoy about a getaway here. Located just over an hour north of San Antonio and south of Austin, Canyon Lake is the perfect place to be when you want to get away from it all.
While there are many ways to enjoy the outdoors in the Canyon Lake Area, one of the main stars of its show is the lake. Fed by the Guadalupe River and covering more than 8,300 acres, the lake’s immaculate waters are enveloped by limestone bluffs and grassy hills shaded by lush oak trees. Rent a pontoon boat and navigate to a quiet cove where you can soak up the sun between dives into the turquoise lake or a jet ski if you’re looking to get your adrenaline pumping. Some marinas and shops also offer kayaks and paddleboards as well.
Want a day on the beach? Parks like Canyon Overlook Park, Comal Park, and Canyon Beach are the kinds of spots you’ll want to unroll a towel and savor all the sunshine and breathtaking scenery. No matter how you spend a day on the lake, make sure to stick around to watch a spectacular sunset. There are many other adventures to be had on the Guadalupe River. Relax in the shade of a bald cypress tree as you fly fish for trout, or float along the rapids on an inner tube.
Although the Canyon Lake Area is known for its water recreation, there’s plenty of fun to be had on land. Camp beneath the wide-open Texas night sky just steps away from the lake’s scenic shoreline and take in all the breathtaking landscapes as you hike pathways like the Madrone Trail and the Guadalupe River Trail. If you’re a golfer, you won’t want to miss a round at Lakeside Golf Club. Featuring 18 holes that wind and weave over rolling Hill Country terrain, the course incorporates sand and water hazards with stunning views to create a challenging and memorable playing experience.
There are many ways to enjoy your time in the Canyon Lake Area, and you don’t have to go far to find a place to stay. Along with the many campgrounds and RV parks in the area, you can also hang your hat in a bed and breakfast, condominium, or an upscale cabin with lake views.
While you can spend your time savoring all the Hill Country’s natural splendor at Canyon Lake, it’s also a spectacular starting point to exploring the region. New Braunfels, San Marcos, and even all the wineries near Fredericksburg are within an hour and a half drive, making it the ultimate starting point for your next Hill Country getaway. Plan your visit to Canyon Lake here.
