DeSoto
A wealth of small-town charm and a spectacular location in the Dallas and Fort Worth Area define DeSoto, the All-America City. This quaint community resides within 15 miles of downtown Dallas in the southwest corner of Dallas County. Sloping hills and lush thickets of trees abound in DeSoto, home to a wealth of parks and natural areas that provide an idyllic venue for an outdoor getaway. In addition to its fresh air and breathtaking vistas, you’ll find a cultural mecca with plenty of family-friendly events throughout the year. In addition, many of the top attractions in the Dallas and Fort Worth Area are just a stone’s throw away, making DeSoto a great place to stay to experience the best of the Metroplex.
DeSoto was established in 1847 as one of the first settlements in North Texas. It wasn’t until the 1940’s that DeSoto evolved from a farming community into an incorporated town, a change necessitated by a population boom in Dallas County. Although the town is about 50,000 residents strong today, it still retains its much of its scenic farmland beauty. One of the best ways to enjoy this today is by visiting any of DeSoto’s parks. Hike the tranquil trails at the 75-acre Windmill Hill Nature Preserve, or go for a jog on the 3.6-mile Roy Orr Trail system that meanders through five urban parks. One of them, Grimes Park, is home to DeSotoBMX, the first covered BMX track in the country. Bring your own bike and gear to ride the track, or check out the free Friday night races to see riders of all ages compete.
There are plenty of outdoor activities in DeSoto, but that’s not all there is to do in town! Stop by the Desoto Town Civic Center, located at North Hampton Road and East Pleasant Run Road, to eat at the selection of restaurants or to do some shopping. The center is also home to the Corner Theater, an outdoor amphitheater that routinely hosts musical acts and events throughout the year. If high-flying action is more your thing, you are in the right place. Book a helicopter tour with DeSoto-based Texas Helicopter Experience and you’ll be high in the sky, taking in an unforgettable view of downtown Dallas, AT&T Stadium, the Fort Worth Stockyards, and many other sites in the Metroplex.
DeSoto is a quiet getaway in the Dallas area with a quaint allure, an abundance of parks, and a fantastic location near world-class attractions, most of which are just a short drive from town. Go fishing and hiking at spectacular Cedar Hill State Park, nestled on the eastern shore of Joe Pool Lake. Head towards downtown Dallas to visit the acclaimed Dallas Zoo or the infamous Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza. For world-class sports, thrilling amusement rides (see: Six Flags Over Texas), and upscale shopping, scoot on over to Arlington, the stomping ground of the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Rangers. There’s a world of adventure within 30 minutes of town, making DeSoto a wonderful starting point for your next North Texas getaway.
