Huntsville

Walk in Texas Revolution hero Sam Houston’s footsteps, lose yourself in a verdant forest of pines and oaks, and explore the depths of a crystalline blue lagoon. This is a taste of what awaits in Huntsville, an inviting town steeped in the history of the Lone Star State situated just 70 miles north of Houston.

Whether you’re looking to immerse yourself in Texas lore, enjoy the breathtaking nature of the Piney Woods, or for an escape from the big city, plan your next road trip to Huntsville.

After being the Governor of Tennessee and later Texas, leader of the Texas Revolution, the first and third President of the Republic of Texas, and a U.S. Senator, Sam Houston settled down in Huntsville. Get to know the man himself when you visit the Sam Houston Memorial Museum.

Covering 15 acres that was once Houston’s homestead, the museum features historic buildings like the Steamboat House (where Houston lived and passed away), as well as modern exhibit halls. Stop by on Saturdays in the fall or spring or on Wednesday in the summer for demonstrations and other events.

While the museum has more than enough to keep you busy, it’s not the only historical attraction in town. Stop by the Oakwood Cemetery to see Houston’s grave and memorial and get a first-rate photo-op with the Sam Houston Statue that towers over I-45 just south of town. Then learn about the inner workings of Texas’ first state prison at the Texas Prison Museum before checking out the art exhibits at the Wynne Home Arts & Visitor Center.

Huntsville is as much of a town for anyone who loves spending time outdoors as it is those fascinated by history. Drive just 10 miles south of downtown Huntsville and you’ll be among the magnificent pine trees of Huntsville State Park. With 21 miles of hiking and biking trails and a 210-acre lake perfect for fishing and paddling, the park offers an endless amount of adventure.

If you prefer a nine iron to a mountain bike, play a round at the 18-hole Raven Nest Golf Club. Nestled on rolling hills on the southwestern side of town, the course offers a compelling challenge for all skill levels along with its affordable rates. For a real change of pace, head to the picturesque Blue Lagoon, a scuba diving facility in Huntsville. Whether you want to take a scuba diving class or swim in the pristine water, this is the place for you.

There’s even more going on in Huntsville than its historic sites and outdoor attractions. Shop and dine in its charming downtown area and don’t miss any of its major annual events, such as the Sam Houston’s Birthday & Texas Independence Day Celebration in March and the General Sam Houston Folk Festival in May.

Visit Huntsville and you’ll discover that it’s easy to chart your own course, just like General Sam Houston himself.
