Things to Do in Deer Park

Deer Park is a mid-sized Texas town with some larger-than-life activities. One of the most important events in the state’s history happened in this area, and no trip to Deer Park is complete without witnessing the memorial to the men who lost their lives helping Texas become a republic. You won’t want to miss out on local cuisine or some great nearby attractions, either. Read on to discover the one-of-a-kind things to do in Deer Park.

See the San Jacinto Monument

After the Battle of San Jacinto, almost one-third of the U.S. changed ownership; few contests in American history have been as consequential. Experience the fight that changed America forever at the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site.

At the base of the 570-foot monument, admire the eight-acre reflecting pool built in the late 1930’s, and take a stroll on the battleground trail and boardwalk. Inside, take a tour of the San Jacinto Museum of History that houses hundreds of thousands of documents, books, and artifacts spanning more than 400 years of Texas history, and watch the award-winning Texas Forever!! The Battle of San Jacinto.

Then, ride the elevator up 489 feet to the Observation Floor, where you can see the battleground, Buffalo Bayou, the Houston Ship Channel, Battleship TEXAS, and more on a clear day.

Enjoy Southern Cooking

Houston is famous for being a melting pot of cultures, with one of the best restaurant scenes in the world. Deer Park does its part by serving up delicious food in two classically Southern styles: barbecue and Cajun. For the latter, Guidry’s Cajun Kitchen is a can’t-miss local joint for boiled crawfish, gumbo, and boudin done right. When you’re in the mood for barbecue, The Brisket House should be on your radar. Its moist brisket and spicy jalapeno sausage have been garnering rave reviews with critics and diners alike since arriving in Deer Park.

The Deer Park location of King’s BBQ brings meat-lovers thick ribeye steaks, chicken fried steaks, ribs, and other down-home staples that are sure to please. Deer Park may excel in these genres of food, but there is so much more for you to tickle your taste buds with here. Restaurants serving Italian, Mexican, Mediterranean, and seafood cuisine can be found in Deer Park. So bring your appetite and you’ll surely leave satisfied.

Stage a Day Trip

Like many of its bordering communities, the city of Deer Park is often thought of as an extension of Houston, so exploring the Bayou City is easily done from any Deer Park hotel. That means the Houston Zoo, Minute Maid Park, NRG Stadium, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Downtown Aquarium, and other world-class attractions are all within a half-hour’s drive west of Deer Park. Turning to the south, the Kemah Boardwalk has amusement park rides, shopping, dining, and special events. Just a little farther, Galveston Bay awaits you for a fishing, boating, skiing, dolphin-spotting, or a surfing adventure. If you’re looking to experience the Houston area and you don’t want to be in all the hustle and bustle, Deer Park is a fantastic starting point.
