Top 4 Things to Do in Corsicana, TX this Spring

By Hunter Lanier

Everyone around the world looks forward to spring, but in Texas, the springs are uniquely special. One of the shining examples of this is Corsicana, TX, which matches the thawing warmth of the season with the small-town warmth of their community. Whether you’re welcomed in by the renowned Derrick Days festival, award-winning wines at the local vineyard, or the paradisical Richland Chambers Reservoir, Corsicana doesn’t let spring weather go to waste. With so many options for a spring getaway, we’ve put together a handy guide of the top things to do in Corsicana this spring.

derrick days

Derrick Days

In the late 19th century, Corsicana became a boomtown for oil and gas—the first in all of Texas. These days, Corsicana celebrates its legendary past with the Derrick Days festival, held annually during the last weekend of April.

Like a geyser of black gold reaching higher and higher into the sky, Derrick Days keeps growing every single year and now takes up the entire downtown area. One of the most popular parts of the festival is the Sip & Stroll, which lets you admire the historic streets while sipping local wines and craft brews. If you want to win a prize—and who doesn’t—visit participating shops during your stroll and get a stamp at each one!

Love history? You won’t want to miss the oil tours, which take you on a bus ride through the city, stopping at historic landmarks and sharing stories from 1894 to the present. For some more recent history, swing by the car show and feast your eyes on some classic beauties.

Once you feast your eyes, your stomach may start getting jealous. Rest assured that Derrick Days will provide all the food trucks your appetite can handle. If you’re bringing kids, you may also be interested in the festival’s free hot dog lunch. The kids might be too busy at the carnival games to remember to eat, so you may have to remind them.

angelita vineyard

Angelita Vineyard & Winery

Maybe you’re looking for a quieter weekend getaway—a place where you can clear the cobwebs with a little fresh air and a lotta sips of award-winning wines. Is it the fresh air or the delicious wine that’s rejuvenating body and soul? We’ll let you decide.

We’re talking, of course, of Angelita’s Vineyard & Winery. At this tranquil vineyard with a front row view of the Texas sunset, you can enjoy wines by the glass or bottle, as well as tastings and flights. Many of the wines on the menu are made with Blanc du Bois grapes picked on the estate itself, giving them a natural sweetness you have to taste to believe.

To take the wine to the next level, you can pair it with appetizers such as gourmet charcuterie plates, smoked salmon bruschetta, and tomato caprese. We recommend dining outside, as well. There’s something about sipping wine in full view of the vines they came from that elevates the experience.

richland chambers

Richland Chambers

Just like your actual mother, it’s important to pay mother nature a visit every so often. And right outside Corsicana, you’ll find one of mother nature’s favorite places in Texas: Richland Chambers. As one of the Lone Star State’s biggest lakes, it’s the perfect place for a day on the water.

Across its almost 45,000 acres, you’ll find plenty of space for swimming, boating, waterskiing, and fishing. Almost every type of Texas fish can be found in the lake, such as largemouth bass, catfish, and carp, just to name a few. The area even offers guided fishing tours if you want to know the best spots or are still getting your sea legs as an angler.

No boat, no problem. The lake boasts 330 miles of beautiful shoreline, where you might even see some peaceful wildlife amongst the majestic homes. If the fish weren’t biting, you still can at one of the lake’s delicious restaurants, like the cabana-inspired Pelican Grill.

purdon groves

Purdon Groves

You may have heard about farm-to-table dining, but rarely will you ever get the chance to dine on the actual farm your food comes from. Opportunity knocks at Purdon Groves, a glamping retreat in Corsicana that celebrates nature, art, and its visitors.

Surrounded by groves, open pastures, and extraordinary oak trees, you’ll satisfy your appetite with expertly prepared meals that use ingredients grown or raised entirely on the farmland. The chef introduces each course of the meal and its paired wine, explaining his cooking methods as he serves each plate.

For an overnight stay, you have three glamping options, each a little “glampier” than the last: the Magical Bell Tent, Farmstay Getaway, and Sagebrush. Each of them is a furnished, open-air tent with air conditioning that lets you sleep under the stars without the dirt and discomfort.

But that’s not all! You can book a farm tour to meet the animals—that includes the adorable Kunekune pigs—go fishing, or stretch your legs on one of the hiking trails.

Spring Activities in Corsicana for the Whole Family

Before the summer heat starts moving in, make the most of the Texas spring in Corsicana. Its Derrick Days celebration takes over downtown for a day of craft beer, history tours, and carnival games. Just outside the city, you can soak in the sunshine and wine at Angelita Vineyard, get in some water sports at Richland Chambers, or enrich your soul with the homespun charm of Purdon Groves. Nobody does spring quite like Corsicana, TX.
